A Quick Intro to the Netherlands
Home of windmills, canals, tulips and Heineken beer, the Netherlands is a country with a rich heritage that’s definitely worth putting on your Europe bucket list.
Sometimes referred to as “Venice of the north” the capital of Amsterdam is famous for its waterways, bicycles, houseboats and coffee shops serving cannabis. It’s an incredibly pretty city that’s home to a number of attractions, including Anne Frank House, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and even a sex museum.
Most travelers visit Amsterdam before moving on to other cities in Europe, but it’s worth staying a while to explore some of Holland’s other towns and cities.
Eat some cheese in Edam, gaze at the windmills of Kinderdijk, enjoy the rides at Efteling or visit the painted wooden houses of Marken…there are lots of awesome things to do in the Netherlands besides strolling around the capital.
If you want to get a taste of the country’s history, take a train to The Hague, which is the country’s political center and home to the International Court of Justice. Wander around the historic Binnenhof district, which boasts a number of important buildings including the the Ridderzaal (Knight’s Hall) and the Armistice or Truce Hall.
